Supported Employment and Job Coaching

Supported Employment helps individuals seek and obtain competitive employment in a field that they desire to work within, and a job coach supports, job coaches supports the individual for a specified time for Community Based Employment.

Job Coaching, refers to the training of an employee by an approved specialist using structured intervention techniques to help the employee learn both how to perform job tasks to the employer’s specifications. Job coaching services assist the employee in learning new tasks and skills, especially if they have difficulty learning new tasks due to a disability. 

Workplace Solutions and Adjustments:
  • Specific Requirements of the job, such as learning new tasks
  • Work related activities and requirements, such as work hours and attendance rules
  • Appropriate work related interpersonal skills and behaviors when interacting with supervisors and co-workers. 
  • Continued support services throughout the employment as deemed necessary

Placing an employee directly in a job with the hands-on assistance of a job coach, areas of vocational strengths and weaknesses can become apparent early in the process and are based on actual, not projected or simulated experience. The employee can receive immediate feedback, assistance and follow-up from the job coach. 

In addition to job site training, job coaching includes related assessments, job development, counseling, advocacy, travel, training and other services needed to maintain employment.

Types of Employment:

Individual Gainful Employment - An individual is employed by the business and utilizes a job coach to ensure their success. 

Mobile Work Crew - (MWC) consists of a team of individuals (typically between 2 to 4), who are supervised by a job coach. The crew completes services such as maintenance, lawn care, janitorial services, (or similar tasks), usually before the business is open. The crew of individuals can be paid directly by the employer, or by an invoice. 

Enclave - They can consist of any number of individuals performing work duties ( a specific task, or multiple tasks) while working alongside non-disabled workers. Job coaches are assigned depending on the amount of individuals in the enclave. 

Q & A 

Who pays the job coach?
Keystone Community Resources (KCR) is responsible for the scheduling and payment of the job coach. 

What if someone is injured? 
The individuals performing the service/job would follow the same process as other 
employees. The job coach, paid by KCR, would report to KCR’s medical department. 

Who provides transportation? 
For Mobile Work Crews (MWCs) and enclaves, transportation is provided by the job coach. 
For individual employment, transportation is  the employee’s responsibility. 

For Mobile Work Crews and Enclaves, when does work usually occur? 
MWCs and enclaves typically occur before the business opens, enclaves and individual employment have no set barriers and occur when the employer requests. 

Will insurance rates, or worker’s comp rates increase? 
No, they will not; rates are based on hazards of operation, not disabilities. 

Funding is approved through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation – OVR.
